Lawns to Legumes Grant Application Open
The Lawns to Legumes program aims to increase habitat for at-risk pollinators in residential settings across the state by providing people with reimbursement-based funding, workshops, coaching and gardening resources.
People who live in Minnesota and have a yard, deck, or other outdoor space for planting can apply to be reimbursed for up to $400 in costs associated with establishing new pollinator habitat. Applications will be accepted through November 30, 2026. Apply online at Blue Thumb’s website.
Televising Results Open House at City Hall on 9/22
If you were not able to attend the open house this summer that featured the results of the sanitary and storm sewer lines, please join the mayor and members of council September 22nd from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at City Hall. Photos of the issues will be displayed for discussion.

- Ladies Night Out/Fall Frenzy | Thursday 9/24 5-8 p.m. Shopping, specials, & fun!
- Polka & Pumpkins in the Park | Saturday 9/26 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at Railroad Park. Polka music, pumpkin painting, & plenty of fall vibes. Fun for all ages!
CITY PROJECT UPDATES
Construction at Tighe Schmitz Park has started and is progressing along well. Weather allowing, grading of the ponds is expected to be finished next week once the site dries up. Concrete curb and gutter along the road edge is expected to follow once the grading and backfilling of the pond is complete.
Photos here of the project at the north end of the park. If you go by, you will also notice improvements around and in the hockey rink. Special thanks to the Parks Committee and Barton Winter for their attention and work!
The 2026 street maintenance project has started with curb and gutter work. Milling of Birchwood Court and the City Hall parking lot is in progress today. Paving is scheduled for tomorrow (Friday), but may be pushed to Monday if it ends up raining (likely).

In the mid-to-late 1800s, stories tell of people traveling from St. Paul by horse and buggy along a rough sand road that is now East County Line Road. They would pitch their tents along the shores of what is now Birchwood and spend time enjoying the lake—much as we do today!
