DID YOU KNOW?
Lucy Tighe was elected to the Birchwood Village council in 1943 as the first woman to serve in that role. During her first meeting, Lucy was unanimously elected as the president of the council, or the mayor, and served until 1947. Thereafter, she served as Village Assessor for more than twenty years.
Clara Schmitz served as the Village Treasurer during that same era, a role for which she was well suited due to her career as a bookkeeper for the Minnesota Department of Tourism.
Schmitz and Tighe were said to keep the village on track during a time of tremendous growth and change, and Tighe-Schmitz Park is named in their honor.
